Is QuickBooks Desktop Discontinued? What Changed (2026)
Oct 14, 2026 · 5 min read
Short answer: no. QuickBooks Desktop has not been shut down, and the 2024 release is still supported and working in 2026. What changed is how Intuit sells it, and that change is why so many people search for "QuickBooks Desktop discontinued."
Here is what actually happened, which versions still work, and what your options are if you want to keep using Desktop.
What Intuit changed in September 2024
On September 30, 2024, Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions to these Desktop products in the United States:
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll
Two things did not change:
- Existing subscribers can keep renewing. If you already had Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Mac Plus, Intuit still sells you renewals and still ships updates.
- QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold to new customers. Enterprise was left out of the September 2024 change.
So Desktop did not go away. It stopped being available to new Intuit customers in its smaller editions.
Is there a QuickBooks Desktop 2025 or 2026?
No. Intuit replaced its yearly Desktop releases with continuous updates. QuickBooks Desktop 2024, and Enterprise 24.0, were the last annual versions. Improvements now arrive as updates to the 2024 product rather than as a new "2025" or "2026" edition.
That matters when you shop. A listing for "QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2025" or "Premier 2026" describes a product Intuit never released. If you want the newest Desktop, you want 2024, kept up to date.
Which versions still work in 2026
- QuickBooks Desktop 2023 and older: discontinued. Support for 2023 ended on May 31, 2026.
- QuickBooks Desktop 2024: supported, and still receiving updates.
- QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise: sold and supported.
When a version is discontinued, the program still opens your company file, but the services that depend on Intuit stop: bank feeds and online banking, payroll, Intuit support and security updates. That is why staying on a discontinued version is risky for anything beyond looking up old records.
Intuit has not announced an end date for QuickBooks Desktop 2024. If you are choosing a version today, 2024 is the one to be on.
What this means if you already use Desktop
If you are on 2024, nothing forces you to move. Keep QuickBooks updated and back up your company file regularly.
If you are on 2023 or older, upgrade. Install 2024 and open your company file; QuickBooks converts it to the 2024 format. Back up first, because the converted file can no longer be opened in the older version.
If you renew with Intuit, budget for higher prices. On February 1, 2026, Intuit raised Desktop renewals: Pro Plus and Mac Plus went to $1,149 a year for one user (plus $230 for each extra user), and Premier Plus to $1,609 a year (plus $345 for each extra user). Intuit has announced another round of Desktop pricing changes from October 1, 2026. Our QuickBooks Desktop pricing guide compares what each option costs over time.
Can you still buy QuickBooks Desktop?
Yes, through two routes:
- Intuit, for Enterprise. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is still sold by Intuit as an annual subscription.
- A license reseller, for the 2024 editions. Independent resellers, including us, sell one-time licenses for the 2024 release: Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Accountant and Enterprise. You pay once, download the installer from Intuit, and activate it with the license you receive.
To be clear about the trade-off: we are not affiliated with Intuit, and support for a license bought here comes from us, not from Intuit. Our guide to buying a genuine QuickBooks Desktop license safely lists what to check before you buy from any reseller, us included.
Should you switch to QuickBooks Online instead?
Only if Online suits the way you work. Online is a monthly subscription that runs in a browser. Desktop runs on your own computer, keeps your company file local, and goes deeper on inventory, job costing and industry reports. Many businesses stay on Desktop for exactly those reasons. Our comparison of QuickBooks Desktop vs Online goes through the differences.
